China's capital city has finished renovating 1,678 old residential communities since the campaign launched in 2012, said officials from the Beijing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development on April 11.

The city has spent 34 billion yuan (US$5.24 billion) on revamping the old neighborhoods, reinforcing structures and improving energy efficiency. The campaign benefited 819,000 households, one-seventh of the residents in the city's urban areas.

The efforts ensured that those buildings can meet Beijing's earthquake resistance standards, increased average indoor temperature by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius, saved 550,000 tons of coal equivalent annually, and reduced about 1.65 million tons of carbon emission, according to the authority's announcement.

The city said the work would continue this year, with plans for 105 renovation and upgrade programs in 16 districts.

Beijing will also install 532 elevators in residential buildings in the six main districts (Dongcheng, Xicheng, Haidian, Chaoyang, Shijingshan and Fengtai) as well as the subsidiary administrative center.

In 2017, the municipal finance authority allocated 3.3 billion yuan for the renovation campaign, and an additional 1 billion yuan is expected to be handed out this year.
