Some 3,490 suspected drug traffickers were detained, including residents of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, in the course of busting 2,790 drug-related cases in the first quarter, the Guangdong Public Security Department's head of drug enforcement, Zhai Kaixia, said.

Police also investigated 20,360 drug addicts during a campaign code-named Guangdong's Anti-Drug Sword from January to March.

"A number of cross-border trafficking channels and distribution centers have been broken up, while several drug trafficking gangs were busted after we deepened cooperation with foreign counterparts," Zhai said in Guangzhou on Tuesday.

"We have achieved a very good beginning in the fight against drug crime this year, but we will not relax our vigilance."

He said Sino-foreign cooperation will be expanded and hinted that more targeted campaigns will be launched to crack down on drug-related crimes in the months ahead.
