Seven expatriates, including a 2016 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, have been awarded permanent residency by China's government, as part of the Shanghai Entry-Exit Talents Plan that came into effect on May 2, reports Chinanews.com.

According to the Shanghai plan released in January, entry-exit policies will be changed to make it easier for people with talents in urgent demand and short supply to move to China. Other changes will allow overseas residents to work on start-ups in China, and for some international students to access two-year residence permits.

A ceremony was held at the Shanghai Public Security Bureau for the first four recipients of permanent residency under the new policy. The four included Feringa Bernard Lucas, the winner of the 2016 Nobel Prize in chemistry, who has also served as a visiting professor at East China University of Science and Technology.
