The environment authority on May 3 announced the air quality assessment report for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region as well as its surrounding areas for the past autumn and winter seasons.

China’s capital tops 28 cities that faced air pollution threat in northern and central China, reporting the most improvement in its PM 2.5 particle density as well as its general air quality, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment said in a statement.

The average concentration of PM 2.5 particles in the 28 cities, including Beijing, Tianjin, and surrounding cities in Hebei, Shandong, Henan and Shanxi provinces, dropped by 25 percent, and the number of heavily polluted days was cut by half year-on-year during the period from October 2017 to March 2018.

Beijing ranks at the top in terms of PM 2.5 particle density, averaging 53 micrograms per cubic meter during the period, a drop of 44.2 percent year-on-year.

Handan in Hebei province as well as Yangquan and Jincheng in Shanxi province did not meet the target for air quality improvement during the period.
