A man was investigated by local urban management authorities in Daguan county, Zhaotong city, Yunnan province in southwest China on June 5 for building a swimming pool on the top of a seven-floor residential building, local news portal Yunnan.cn reports.

Several residents in the building reported to the county's Urban Administrative and Law Enforcement Bureau that someone built a swimming pool on the top of their building, causing major safety concerns.

After investigation, urban management officials found that the pool was built for private use by a resident surnamed Lan.

Covering more than 40 square meters, the 1-meter-deep pool held 40 tons of water, which added 1,000 kilograms of weight per square meter of roof, in addition to existing building materials. Normally, the load-bearing capacity of a residential building roof is only 200 kilograms per square meter.

Urban management officials have declared the pool illegal and unsafe, and ordered Lan to dismantle it before receiving other punishment according to law.

Lan has now drained the water and begun to dismantle the pool.
