The renovation of Tiananmen Tower, the front gate of the Forbidden City and a monument in the center of Beijing, will start on June 15, the management committee in charge of Tiananmen Square announced.

The tower will be closed to tourists as of Friday. The renovation is scheduled not to be completed until the end of May next year, but the tower may reopen to tourists by the end of April.

The tower has generally remained in sound condition over recent years. The renovation will focus on fixing the leaking of water onto the platform, the peeling of wall covering, the cracking of decorative color paintings, and the aging of some devices, which have hindered the experience of visitors and the use of the tower on important occasions.

According to archeologists, the tower underwent two major renovations during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. In 1970, the tower was renovated and reinforced to make the ancient building more resistant to earthquakes and equip it with modern devices like radio and television broadcasting equipment.
