PM2.5 drops 16.9 pct. in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei in first 5 months

The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region's average PM 2.5 density in the first five months of 2018 was measured at 64 micrograms per cubic meter, 16.9 percent less than during the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment.

During the first five months, the number of days with good air quality in China's 338 cities at the prefecture level and above accounted for 78.1 percent of the total number of days, 2.5 percent more than the first five months in 2017. The average PM2.5 density of these cities was 48 micrograms per cubic meter, down 7.7 percent year on year.

In May, 13 cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region saw the number of days with good air quality increase by 8.7 percent, up to 50.7 percent of the days in the month. Meanwhile, the region's average PM2.5 density reached 44 micrograms per cubic meter, down 6.4 percent. During the first five months, the number of days with good air quality in these cities grew by 3.7 percent year on year, up to 57.8 percent of the total days.

The number of days with good air quality in Beijing accounted for 39.3 percent of the total days in May, a drop of 10.7 percent year on year. During the first five months, the number of days with good air quality in the city grew by 1.2 percent year on year, and 59.9 percent of the total days reportedly had good air quality. The city's PM 2.5 density stood at 58 micrograms per cubic meter, a decline of 18.3 percent.
