The Department of Justice (DoJ) of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government launched the Prosecution Week Friday to increase public's awareness of HKSAR's criminal justice system.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Secretary for Justice of the HKSAR government Teresa Cheng said that the rule of law is the very bedrock of the success of the Hong Kong society.

"We believe that by a better public awareness of our society's laws and our criminal justice system, the citizens of Hong Kong, especially our younger generation, will have a better understanding of and respect for the law and legal consequences prohibited by law," Cheng said.

She said prosecutors are required by law to disregard all irrelevant considerations and make a fair and impartial prosecutorial decision without fear or favor. "Simply put, no one is above the law."

Held for the 7th consecutive year, the Prosecution Week will run until June 29 under the theme "The Law, Transparency, Public Interest." A host of activities including court visits and mock trials for students will be arranged.
