With the city's fast economic development and increased number of commuters, the traffic condition of the 3rd Ring Road has become relatively saturated. Since 2016, Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport has started repair work on the 3rd Ring Road, in a bid to ensure safety and improve the transportation infrastructure and services.

Beijing finished the repair work on the western and northern stretches of the 3rd Ring Road in 2016, and the eastern stretch in 2017. The southern part will be the last stage of the whole project.

The revamp of the South 3rd Ring Road, with a total length of 14.28 kilometers, covers an area of 506,000 square meters, including 60 bridges and 24 bus stations. The materials used in the construction will improve the durability and structural strength as well as reduce noise.

During the construction, the city will also take into consideration barrier-free facilities. Blind tracks shall be set up along bus stations. In addition, efforts will be made to improve the road to help relieve traffic congestion.
