The Beijing municipal government released a plan on developing the city's brick-and-mortar bookstores at a press conference on July 18.
According to the plan, each of the 16 districts in Beijing will have a large bookstore by 2020, when there will also be 200 bookstores in the city's bustling commercial streets, densely-populated residential areas, and around landmarks and popular tourist sites. The city also plans to strengthen public-private partnership as a way to build more bookstores, and promote reading among the public by ensuring that they have access to bookstores with a 15-minute walk in the downtown areas.
To improve the city's cultural services, the municipal government has encouraged bookstores to open 24 hours and combine book sales with cultural activities such as media entertainment, design, and tourism in cooperation with public libraries.
The city is also encouraging brick-and-mortar bookstores to take advantage of new technologies such as the internet and the internet of things. Opening online stores would be helpful for traditional bookstores to further expand their business, the city says in its new plan
According to the press conference on Wednesday, Beijing will provide financial support for traditional bookstores, including tax relief and subsidies, which would be available to those built in line with the city's urban planning.
