Beijing ranks 1st in China as int'l conference host

In 2017, Beijing hosted 81 international meetings, the most in China and sixth in the Asia Pacific region, according to a report at the opening ceremony of the Incentives, Business Travel and Meetings Expo China (IBTM China).
Yin Peiyan, deputy secretary general of the Beijing Municipal People's Government, said Beijing has held itself as the center for international exchanges in recent years. Taking the development of the meeting and exhibition industry as a key strategy, the Chinese capital has hosted an increasing number of large-scale and high-level international meetings and fairs over the years, Yin said.
In 2017, Beijing has hosted 215,000 meetings and 17.24 million attendees. The two numbers have respectively increased by 4.7 percent and 8.4 percent when compared with 2016. The revenue from hosting these conferences reached 11.87 billion yuan (US$1.73 billion), an increase of 5.4 percent over 2016.
Moreover, the city held 790 exhibitions and fairs in 2017 with a total area of 6.1 million square meters, received 10.29 million people and reached a revenue of 12.38 billion yuan.
Cao Pengcheng, deputy director of the Beijing Tourism Development Committee, said the Chinese capital has attracted a batch of international fairs with its established venues. The fairs included industry exhibitions for food and beverage, machinery, medical care, architecture and building materials, green development and environmental protection, tourism and consumption, etc.
The usage rate of Beijing's exhibition venues is now ahead of other cities. For instance, the National Convention Center has the highest usage rate of over 80 percent. The construction of new convention venues in Gubei Water Town and Yanqi Lake will add more competitiveness to Beijing in hosting international fairs.
Beijing will develop more tourism products in culture, exhibition, sports, recreation, and research in the future, Cao said. The city will also promote the sustainable development of business travel and meetings through the improvement of fair facilities as well as the cultivation of industrial clusters.
