Beijing has mapped out the operations plan for several ground traffic routes to serve the city's new airport -- Beijing Daxing International Airport -- which is scheduled to open in September 2019, according to the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform on Sept. 19.

The new airport is situated to the north bank of Yongding River, 46 kilometers from Tiananmen Square, 67 kilometers from Beijing Capital International Airport, and 55 kilometers from Xiongan New Area.

The transport network around the airport is comprised of five vertical routes and two horizontal routes, known together as the "five vertical and two horizontal."

The five vertical routes include the completed Beijing-Taipei Expressway that opened to traffic at the end of 2016, the new airport expressway to be accessible to traffic in May 2019, the new subway line linking the airport and downtown Beijing, currently in the initial phase and to be ready for traffic in May 2019, the Beijing-Xiongan intercity high-speed railway to come into use in May 2019, as well as the extension of Beijing-Kaifeng Expressway to be ready for full operation in June.

The two horizontal routes include the new airport north line expressway that will be available for traffic in 2019 and the intercity railway's first phase to be completed in 2022.

According to the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform, Beijing is planning to construct an airport economic area with high standards. The goal is to build a comprehensive bonded zone, facilities for the high-end service industries including science and technology R&D, cross-border e-commerce as well as financial services, capabilities for conference hosting and international exchanges, hospitals for foreign professionals, and an innovation park for startup companies, projects and professionals.

The new airport is expected to handle 72 million passenger trips, 630,000 takeoffs and landings, and 2 million metric tons of cargo and mail annually by 2025. In the long-term, it is expected to handle more than 100 million passengers, 880,000 takeoffs and landings, and 4 million metric tons of cargo and mail annually by 2040.
