The Beijing Charity Volunteer Federation recently launched a campaign to eliminate litter around the city's landmarks and at its major scenic areas during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday.

Volunteers gathered at the Tiananmen Square, the Great Wall Scenic Area, the Xishan Cultural Belt, the Great Wall Cultural Belt, and the Eastern Canal Cultural Belt to promote the campaign in order to raise people's litter awareness and prevention.

On Sept. 24, at Tiananmen Square, volunteers and tourists vowed not to create any litter. Charity volunteers picked up the garbage, to the applause of bystanders in the area. Many tourists also chose to join in.

According to the organizers, the campaign's slogans of "I volunteer to participate in the zero-litter campaign" and "I promise not to be a litter creator" are aimed at raising people's litter awareness in order to make Beijing cleaner and more beautiful.

During the campaign, charity volunteers in Beijing would travel to various scenic areas to help the sanitation workers dispose of the garbage, pick up paper scraps, plastic bags and other littering left by passers-by, and promote the importance and necessity of litter prevention to tourists. They would also persuade tourists to be courteous and stop them from damaging cultural relics and littering at public places.

According to the Beijing Charity Volunteer Federation, during the Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day holiday, 11,000 volunteers are expected to participate in the zero-litter campaign, with total service hours to reach 50,000 hours. In addition, the volunteers would provide assistance, counseling, and guiding services to more than 600,000 people, and expect to attract more than 7 million people to participate in the activity.
