China's first provincial-level regulation on the physical health of students will be officially put into effect in Shandong Province on November 1, 2018, reports the Legal Daily.

The regulations have explicit provisions on many aspects, including one covering the use of electronic devices in elementary and high schools, according to the report.

The regulation stipulates the physical health of students will be one of the more important standards in the evaluation of schools.

To avoid adding additional burdens on students, school times for elementary and high school students should not surpass 6 hours and 8 hours each day respectively, according to the regulations.

In terms of sports activity, the stipulation says students should have at least one hour of exercise at school each day. A comprehensive sports activity should also be held at least once a semester.

The protection of the students' eyesight is also mentioned in the regulation, which stipulates that the students should be taught the knowledge of properly using their eyes. The new rules also say elementary and high schools should strictly ban students from taking on cellphones, tablet computers or other electronic devices in school. It is also recommended that parents should limit the time their children use electronic devices at home.

Legislation on the use of electronic devices by students is common in developed countries, claims the Legal Daily report.
