By the end of this year, the construction waste disposal capacity of Beijing's Chaoyang district is expected to reach an annual rate of 10 million tons, with a recycling rate of 95 percent, as the waste is treated and turned into permeable bricks and raw material for concrete.

The construction waste disposal in the core urban area of Beijing has always been a problem. To tackle it, the Sunhe and Dongba construction waste recycling facilities in Chaoyang district will take the initiative to help process materials from the city's Dongcheng and Xicheng districts.

Several truckloads of construction waste from Xicheng district arrived at the Dongba facility before the National Day. After a series of steps such as crushing, sorting, screening, and processing, the large pieces of waste can be used as materials for concrete, roadbed and permeable bricks.

Since last year, Chaoyang district has been cooperating with resource recycling companies to establish the construction waste recycling facilities at Sunhe and Dongba on a pilot basis. Currently the two projects are capable of disposing 1.4 million tons of construction waste per year, with the recycling rate reaching more than 95 percent.

The two projects have so far disposed of 300,000 tons of construction waste. In the future, in addition to handling waste in Chaoyang, they will also be disposing construction waste from Dongcheng and Xicheng districts.

Apart from the two recycling lines in Dongba and Sunhe, Chaoyang district has also established another facility, namely, Shibalidian Construction Waste Recycling Line. In addition, a fixed facility is under development and is due to begin operating by the end of the year.

"The combination of temporary and fixed disposal facilities in Chaoyang district is an innovative one, which is aimed to realize the goal of dealing with 10 million tons of construction waste by the end of the year," an official from the Chaoyang City Management Committee said. The district will further promote the use of products made from construction waste to fully recycle resources and thus contribute to Beijing's overall development, the official added.
