Quzhou, a city in Zhejiang province, held its second Tea-drinking Day Festival on Nov. 10. With the theme of "Fragrance of Tea, Benevolence of Quzhou," the ceremony was celebrated at the Ancestral Temple of Confucius and the Confucius Cultural Park.

The festival was held to strengthen the implementation of the "spurring vitality in Quzhou and building the city into a beautiful garden" strategy. It was also targeted at vigorously promoting Quzhou's city brand of "home of southern Confucianism, a model city of virtue," as well as pushing forward the development of Quzhou's tea industry and boosting the development of rural areas.

The festival has invited many distinguished guests, including experts from national, provincial and municipal cultural tea research societies, officials from the Quzhou municipal government, as well as celebrities in the tea industry and the cultural circle.

A total of five parts were included in the festival. Centered on displaying Quzhou's tea culture, the first part was poem recitation, the second part was calligraphy and painting shows, the third part was the launch ceremony, the forth part was exhibition of famous tea, and the fifth part was a cultural forum. Among them, the third part included three sub-items, namely a tea-themed coming-of-age ceremony, a prize-giving ceremony for the tea-themed poems and essays competition, and a flag-giving ceremony for volunteers of the tea culture. The festival also set up parallel sessions at Quzhou's tourist attractions, schools, squares, stations, companies, communities and tea houses, to attract all of its citizens to join the event.

Aside from the exhibition of tea brands and exchange of tea art, the festival will also stage special lectures given by experts in the tea industry.

As one of the leading agricultural industries, Quzhou's tea plantation has a long history that can date back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Until 2017, there were more than 13,700 hectares of tea gardens in Quzhou, with the total yield of 8,242 tons worth 1.11 billion yuan (US$160 million). Among which, tea with famous brands took up 48.12 percent of the output and 90.54 percent of the production value. The famous brands include: Kaihua Longding, Jiangshan Green Peony, Luoyang Qubo, Changshan Yinbo, Longyou Wugang, Fangshan and Quzhou Jade Dew, with Kaihua Longding recognized as "Famous Trademark of China" and one of the Top 10 Best Tea Brands of Zhejiang province. In recent years, the tea industry has seen rapid growth by improving agricultural production conditions, optimizing the structure of tea varieties, strengthening technological support, boosting the integration of tertiary industries, and reinforcing brand building. Quzhou's tea industry is now a very important factor for farmers in mountain areas to increase income, and it has brought them a bright future and a vast development space.

Since its foundation, Quzhou Tea Culture Research Society has closely followed the ideology of "Innovative, Coordinated, Green, Open, and Share," and has strongly boosted the development of the city's tea industry. After several years of careful cultivation, the publicity of Quzhou's tea culture has gained substantial effects. In 2018 alone, Quzhou Tea Culture Research Society has participated in various tea exhibitions both in and out of Quzhou.

The research society actively goes out, and at home it has not slacked off in the construction and promotion of tea culture. The research society has invited tea culture experts to go to offices, schools and communities to hold all kinds of tea culture lectures, popularize tea knowledge, and create a good atmosphere for all people to learn, know, understand, love and promote tea. Through the research society's relentless efforts in the past few years, more and more people now love tea, understand the tea theory, and know the characteristics of different tea.

In addition to promoting tea culture, Quzhou Tea Culture Research Society also utilizes the spreading of tea culture and the training of tea artistic skills as important starting methods in further promoting the development of Quzhou's tea industry. With the goal of cultivating new types of professional farmers, the research society has implemented a project of upgrading the quality of tea enterprises and tea farmers. It has also held a series of trainings in tea planting technology, tea marketing, and tea e-commerce. Such training has been well received by practitioners, of which many have now become skilled professionals. Now, they gather together and spontaneously make contributions to the promotion of Quzhou's tea culture and the development of its tea industry.

The city will vigorously promote the creative transformation and innovative development of outstanding traditional culture, build its city brand, and create a national tourism demonstration zone. Quzhou will strive to build itself into a city of virtue, also one of the best tourism destination cities in Zhejiang province.
