The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and parts and Shanxi provinces in North China, and parts of Shaanxi in Northwest China are set to see heavy air pollution from Tuesday to Thursday, chinanews.com reported Tuesday.

Due to adverse weather conditions, Beijing, Tianjin, central and southern parts of Hebei, eastern and southern parts of Shanxi, western parts of Shandong, northern parts of Henan and central parts of Shaanxi are expected to see heavy air pollution for two to three consecutive days, and some cities may experience severe air pollution according to a notice issued by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment.

Starting Thursday at noon, cold fronts will gradually reduce pollution in the affected region, and move it slowly southward.

Good air will return to most parts of the region from Friday to Sunday, except for mild pollution in individual areas thanks to continued cold fronts and favorable diffusion conditions.

Beijing in particular will see medium to heavy air pollution on Tuesday, heavy air pollution on Wednesday and Thursday morning, and mild air pollution Thursday afternoon before finally having good air back from Friday to Sunday.

Winter heating and vehicle emissions combined with continuous south wind and high humidity intensified the secondary transformation of gaseous pollutants such as NOx and SO2, and raised the concentration of PM2.5, the notice read.
