Beijing has built 1,487 kilometers of new sewage pipelines, and upgraded 434 kilometers of current drainage pipelines to separate rainwater from wastewater. The progress so far exceeds the tasks set out in the city's 3-year sewage treatment action plan released in 2016.

In order to improve the city's sewage treatment capacity and water recycling capabilities, Beijing will increase the treatment rates of sewage across the city to 94 percent by the end of 2019. All wastewater in the city's central areas and the established areas in the sub-center will be treated, while 93 percent of wastewater in the city's new areas will be treated.

In 2018 alone, Beijing Drainage Group Co. built 127 kilometers of sewage pipelines and renovated 112 kilometers of drainage pipelines.

At present, Beijing's central areas have the capability of disposing and recycling more than 4.2 million cubic meters of wastewater daily and treating 6,128 tons of sludge per day, thus remarkably improving the city's water environment.

New areas in Beijing are constructing separate pipelines for sewage and rainwater. Last year, three projects were approved to separate rainwater and wastewater by upgrading the drainage networks in Pinggu, Daxing, and Fangshan districts. Recently, the project to improve Huairou New Area's sewage and drainage systems are almost complete, with supporting facilities still under construction.
