Beijing aims to become a powerhouse in the movie and television industry with global influence by 2020, according to a document issued recently by the city.

As the cultural center of China, Beijing's cultural industry pulled in more than 1.07 trillion yuan (about US$1,579 billion) in 2018, of which the movie and TV industry was a significant part.

The recently released document reveals Beijing's plans to further develop its film and TV industry by focusing on ten aspects. Two of the aspects relate to increased integration of the movie and TV industry with technological industries such as big data and artificial intelligence, as well as with other related industries. Two others aim to encourage investment and financial support in the industry, plus leveraging greater support for major companies and projects and improving the environment to nurture brand products. Additional aspects include increasing the global influence of Beijing's movie and TV industry, as well as building industrial parks with global influence. Finally, the city plans to boost consumption in the industry and improve its overall management.

Data shows that Beijing has the largest number of film- and TV-related companies in China: it is home to 9,895 companies that hold permits to produce broadcasting and TV programs, plus 125 companies with permits to produce internet-based programs. Beijing-based companies produced 410 domestic films last year and the city's overall box office revenue reached 3.5 billion yuan.
