China's capital city vows continued efforts this year to improve traffic and encourage the use of public transportation, authorities announced at a meeting yesterday.

According to the goals set out in the meeting, the number of cars in the city will be restricted to around 6.2 million, compared to 6.08 million as of last December. Additionally, the combined length of the urban transit system will reach 699.3 kilometers, with further expansion of metro lines and capacity improvement programs.

Authorities say they will also optimize 80 bus lines, increase efficiency of existing bus lanes, promote electronic payment on all bus and metro lines, and pilot intelligent security check methods.

To advance coordinated development in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and improve traffic linkage of the city's sub-center, Beijing will also push forward several road construction and expansion programs by accelerating the building and renovation of several transportation hubs and stations in and near the city's sub-center, and promoting the opening of waterway navigation through several sections of rivers in eastern Beijing's Tongzhou district.

Moreover, Beijing aims to increase the proportion of green travel used in the downtown area to 74 percent. This effort involves plans to improve the condition of bike lanes and footpaths over 850 kilometers of roadways, and to renovate 20 pedestrian bridges. Construction of Beijing's first bicycle-only road, connecting Huilongguan and Shangdi, is also expected to be completed in 2019.

According to the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport, the city will step up efforts to deal with congestion in key areas, improve traffic through major railway stations and airports, and upgrade transportation facilities like traffic lights, electronic monitoring equipment and devices to capture images of illegal commuting and parking.

Efforts will also be made to regulate curb parking, tourist buses and shared bikes, the commission said.
