Wang Sanyun, former vice chairman of the Education, Science, Culture and Health Committee of the National People's Congress, was sentenced to 12 years in prison Thursday for taking bribes worth over 66.85 million yuan (9.98 million U.S. dollars).

His illegal gains will be turned in to the national treasury. He was also fined 4 million yuan, according to a statement by a court in the city of Zhengzhou, Henan Province.

Between 1993 and 2017, Wang had served as senior official respectively in provinces of Guizhou, Anhui, Fujian, and Gansu.

The court found that during the period, Wang took advantage of his posts or used convenience associated with his power and status, to provide help in construction project contracting and personnel promotion.

In return, he accepted gifts and money worth over 66.85 million yuan, either by himself or through some "specific affiliated persons," the court said.

The statement said the court handed down the sentence while taking into consideration the fact that Wang confessed, provided tip-offs of other major violations, showed repentance and had been cooperative in returning his illegal gains.
