Expo 2019 Beijing is set to open at the end of April with 5G coverage. The expo park will include demonstration areas using 5G to unite new technologies and traditional horticulture.

The park has finished building a mobile communication infrastructure that would provide visitors with 5G coverage over 200,000 square meters of indoor area. Organizers of the expo are anticipating no less than 16 million visitors over the next six months.

"The mobile communication infrastructure includes 12 large base stations, 74 micro base stations, 114 intelligent lamp-poles, and over 200,000 square meters of signal coverage," said Fan Xiaoqing, CEO of China Tower Beijing Branch. "This contributes to 4G and 5G coverage provided by China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom within the expo and on neighboring major roads as well."

In the 5G Exhibition Room, visitors will be able to experience such high-tech applications as unmanned aerial vehicles, self-driving cars, and 8K HD videos. Also, a number of 5G mobile terminal will enable visitors to experience high-speed downloading and low latency. Meanwhile, the park will offer remote medical services using 5G.

This 5G information network will demonstrate ways of sharing resources, including power and network service providers. For instance, the 12 macro base stations are shared by five companies, which reduces the construction costs by over 50 percent. The 45-meter base station near the International Hall has four levels full of equipment, servicing 11 communications systems including China's three major telecom carriers and two local providers. It also controls the park's security cameras and lighting.

The expo will also help to showcase the multi-functional lamp-poles equipped with antennas, security cameras, and LED screens. Yanqing district is planning to install these poles in its urban area.
