Fewer pedestrians were seen on street, and many were wearing sun-proof clothing and glasses and holding a mini fan in their hands as high temperature hit the Chinese capital on Monday.

Beijing's observatory issued a blue alert on Monday for high temperatures over the next two days.

The temperature could rise to over 35 degrees Celsius in most parts of Beijing from Monday to Tuesday and could top 38 degrees Celsius in parts of the city on Monday.

The observatory advised residents to guard against the heat wave and said workers exposed to high temperatures should take protective measures.

Despite the heat, lamp maintainers were still working on Chang'an Avenue near Tian'anmen Square.

"The temperature on the lift truck is even higher than the ground, between 40 to 50 degrees Celsius," said Chen Chunguang, who was cleaning and changing bulbs for a lamp.

Chen said they had prepared iced water and medicine to avoid heat stroke.

However, the enthusiasm of tourists to popular destinations including the square was not abated. A nearby shop owner said iced bottle water and ice creams were most popular.

An alert was issued during the past weekend, with the highest temperature reaching 38.8 degree Celsius on Sunday in the suburban district of Changping.

China has a four-tier color-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
