CAST opens annual meeting in Harbin

The China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) opened its 21st annual meeting on June 29 in Harbin, located in northeast China's Heilongjiang province, focusing on innovation-driven reform and opening up and the role of science and technology in regional revitalization. 

Wan Gang, vice chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee and CAST president, delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony. 

He recalled the remarkable accomplishments achieved by the association, and urged the science community to strengthen innovation capability and make more contributions to national development.

Huai Jinpeng, secretary of the Leading Party Members' Group and executive vice president of CAST, gave an introduction, outlining that the event would consist of 35 sessions, including a Forum on Development and Governance of Science and Technology Associations, the 2nd Forum for World STM Journals, and meetings to discuss machinery manufacturing and intelligent manufacturing technologies.

Ryoji Noyori, Japanese winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in chemistry and a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, discussed the future of science, technology and innovation. 

He stressed that scientific and technological progress had to be sustainable and serve to promote closer harmony between humanity and nature.


A high-level dialogue on 5G and the future was also held during the opening ceremony.

About 1,600 people, including Chinese scientists and officials, and scholars from Japan, Russia, the United States, Britain and Malaysia are attending the annual gathering.

It is a high-profile scientific event aiming to deliver a series of major international activities for the science community, government authorities, and entrepreneurs to exchange ideas and develop closer ties.
