Wan Gang, president of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), had a face-to-face dialogue with about 400 student representatives from four universities in Harbin, Heilongjiang province on June 29.

Wan, who also holds the position of vice chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, inspired college students to devote themselves to revitalizing northeast China, urging them to develop international perspectives and spread Chinese culture while drawing on foreign experience.

Responding to a question on the building up of an ecological civilization, Wan pointed out that Heilongjiang province has a unique advantage in agriculture and forestry studies due to its good ecology and abundance of ice and snow. He suggested that students should focus their studies on basic subjects, apply knowledge into practice and be persistent in the pursuit of their dreams.

"You won't feel bored when you indulge yourself in research you are enthusiastic about and which is of national strategic importance," said Wan, encouraging them to make good use of the Internet to solve scientific problems together with like-minded friends.

The president and students also discussed innovation and entrepreneurship, maritime power building, three-dimensional printing, new energy development strategy, and the relationship between natural sciences and social sciences.

Student representatives also took this opportunity to invite their peers across the nation to work in northeast China after graduation, calling on them to contribute to the region's development together.
