A fleet of electric taxis have been put on the roads in the city of Chengdu, capital of southwestern China's Sichuan Province Friday.

The city's taxi association said that the 200 taxis were the first group of electric taxis introduced in the city to reduce car emissions and improve the air quality.

It is expected that more than 4,400 electric taxis will come into service in Chengdu by the end of this year, accounting for around 30 percent of the total number of taxis in the downtown area.

Xue Yuan, an official of the taxi association said that, apart from emissions reduction, electric taxis can also cut costs, increase taxi drivers' incomes and improve the passenger experience.
