A total of 56 flights have been canceled by 10 a.m. Friday at the Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport in southwest China's Sichuan Province after a thunderstorm hit the airport.

Another 71 flights at the airport have been delayed and 10 inbound flights landed at alternate airports.

The thunderstorm hit Chengdu, capital of Sichuan, from 4:30 a.m. Friday. Affected by the bad weather, the airport's runways were both closed for hours.

As the thunderstorm weakened, one of the runways was reopened at 7 a.m. and the other reopened at 8:10 a.m. The delayed flights are taking off and returning to normal.
