China's national observatory issued an orange alert for Typhoon Mitag Tuesday, as it is expected to bring gales and torrential rains to eastern China.

The typhoon, the 18th of the year, is expected to make landfall at or pass by the coast of Zhejiang Province Tuesday afternoon or evening, the National Meteorological Center said.

The eye of Mitag was 28.2 degrees north latitude and 122.2 degrees east longitude, and it was moving at 20 km per hour northward with weakening power, according to the observatory's forecast at 1:00 p.m.

The observatory warned of strong winds and rainstorms in Shanghai and provinces of Zhejiang, Fujian and Jiangsu.

It suggested people in affected areas avoid outdoor activities, and local authorities take precautions against possible flash floods caused by the downpours.

China has a four-tier, color-coded weather warning system for typhoons with red representing the most severe, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
