Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region is one of the most arid regions in the world, yet it still is a major agricultural base in China. These unique individuals have played a special role in building agriculture in Xinjiang into what it is today.

Chen Xuegeng, an academician with the China Academy of Engineering and a researcher with Shihezi University, has contributed greatly to creating methods that result in large increases in cotton yields as well as the mechanization of cotton planting in Xinjiang.

An expert in agricultural machinery, Chen led his team upgrading the seeder which also places membrane over cotton seeds.  A series of new products were designed by his team to accommodate different edaphic and climatic conditions. The application of such machinery greatly improved the cotton yield in Xinjiang. By introducing the mechanical harvesting of cotton, Chen also helped famers substantially reduce their labor costs.

However, placing membrane  while seeding is not ecologically friendly and poses a threat to the sustainable development of agriculture. As such, Chen and his team have developed a dozen types of membrane recycling machines to tackle this challenge. To minimize pollution, Chen and his team are now working on the research and development of a membrane that is more degradable.
