Sponsored by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and co-sponsored by the Russian Union of Scientific and Engineering Associations, the First World Science and Technology Forum took place in Beijing on Oct. 16 and 17.

Under the theme of "Science, Technology and Development," the forum focused on the topics of "S&T Revolution and Industrial Transformation," "Science & Technology and Education & Culture" and "Growth of Young Scientists and SMEs" to echo the new trends in the era of changes.

When addressing the forum's opening ceremony, Wan Gang, president of CAST, said that working together to deepen international exchanges and cooperation and leveraging science and technology to promote sustainable development are not only imperative to addressing global challenges, but also compliant with the new expectations of people from all countries and the global science community.

Science, technology and innovation (STI) must serve as the fundamental driving force for sustainable development, Wan stressed, adding that the development of science and technology must follow shared global values.

Bai Chunli, president of CAS, said on the same occasion that in today's world, with the in-depth development of economic globalization and social informatization, technological innovation has become a pivotal indicator for reshaping the global landscape and creating mankind's future.

Forming a new landscape featuring deep integration, complementary advantages, cooperation and win-win results by enhancing international technology cooperation and promoting the complete flow and optimized distribution of various innovative factors in the world could facilitate a new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation, Bai added.

Li Xiaohong, president of CAE, remarked that in the context of the new round of S&T revolution and industrial transformation, the entire international science community needs to make concerted efforts to give full play to the positive role of science and technology and create a better future for mankind.

Li called for continuous focus on the most cutting-edge, advanced, strategic and disruptive technologies and active participation in global innovative governance.

Daya Reddy, president of the International Science Council, said, "As we harness our expertise and energy across the scientific community worldwide, it is appropriate to recognize the important role of the forum: beyond a conference and an opportunity to share ideas, the forum's main objective, that is, building a platform to enable better cooperation and exchanges in relation to science and technological development, is an important and timely initiative."

Over 400 academicians and experts, Nobel laureates, fellows of prestigious S&T organizations, celebrated entrepreneurs and university presidents from 18 countries and regions attended the forum.
