Chinese courts concluded about 6.28 million criminal cases in their first trials from the beginning of 2014 to June 2019, President of the Supreme People's Court (SPC) Zhou Qiang said Wednesday.

In those trials, nearly 7.1 million people were found guilty, with 81.6 percent getting sentences of less than three years in prison, and more than 5,200 suspects found not-guilty, said Zhou while delivering a report on strengthening criminal trials at the ongoing bi-monthly session of the National People's Congress Standing Committee.

The report summarized courts' work on criminal trials, which has contributed to the sustained and healthy development of the economy and overall social stability.

Courts nationwide concluded 613,000 drug cases in their first trials, convicting a total of 619,000 people.

The SPC has also published a variety of typical drug cases to raise public awareness of the dangers of drug abuse in the past few years.

During the same period, Chinese courts concluded 194,000 graft cases in their first trials, convicting 207,000 people, including 140 former centrally-administrated officials.

A total of 14,000 people were convicted for giving bribes, and efforts have been intensified to curb corruption that occurs on the people's doorsteps and those found in poverty alleviation, said the report.

It also disclosed the progress of handling gang-related crime, crime involving intellectual property infringement, telecom and Internet fraud, as well as crime in the food and drug sectors.

On environment cases, courts nationwide concluded 110,000 criminal cases related to the environment and natural resources, and 143,000 people were convicted.

The courts have severely punished those involved in the illegal discharge of pollutants, illegal sand mining and illegal fishing along the Yangtze River and tried cases of dumping solid waste along the river to promote ecological protection and restoration of the water, the report said.

The report also introduced plans on further improving criminal trials, highlighting the absolute leadership of the Party.

The SPC pledged to severely crack down on all kinds of crimes related to infiltration, subversion, sabotage, violent terrorism, separatism and religious extremism.

On deepening criminal trial reforms, the report proposed to promote the establishment of an inter-agency big data platform and the use of an intelligent assistant system in handling criminal cases.

The SPC also pledged to strengthen legal aid in criminal proceedings and push forward a new mechanism of supervision on criminal trials, where local people's congresses hear reports of people's courts on the subject.
