Beijing's Shunyi district has begun constructing a closed test site for autonomous driving, which will cover 1,200 mu (around 80 hectares), according to the Bureau of Economy and Information Technology in the district on Tuesday during the 2019 World Intelligent Connected Vehicles Conference.

The road construction and work on setting up test scenarios in Phase 1, covering an area of 300 mu, have already been completed, the bureau said.

The test site would consist of a complete road system including highways, bridges, and tunnels, as well as multiple simulated urban facilities including gas stations, toll stations, streets, and signal lights to make each scenario as real as possible.

The whole test site is to provide over 150 test units and 50 application scenarios. In addition, a 170-meter-diameter dynamic area is planned to be set up at the end of the highway section so as to create more temporary test scenarios.

A 145-kilometer test road for intelligent connected vehicles has also been built and is now open to public use. Shunyi district is planning to complete 300 kilometers of these roads by 2020. The district also aims to build a 200-square-kilometer demonstration zone for intelligent connected vehicles to create an open and collaborative ecosystem.
