Beijing's first waterless public toilet, which is said to be smart and eco-friendly, has been put into service in Beijing Olympic Green. Three features stand out: face-scanning paper-out procedure, automatic operational system, and no need of flushing water. According to the park, each of the toilet could help save 1,000 tons of water per year.

The new toilet was put to use at the No. 3 entrance of Beijing Olympic Green on Oct. 22. Compared with traditional toilets, the simple and impressive new toilet frees people from stinky smell.

The No. 3 entrance accommodates group tours to the park, so capacity is important for public facilities at the location. Park authorities have worked to optimize facility layout according to visitor traffic. The new toilet could accommodate 25 people at the same time, helping to meet the demand together with the existing 16 mobile toilet cubicles.

In the past, traditional flushing public toilets and foam public toilets all have had excrement flushed to the container in the bottom, and then pumped out every day. The waterless public toilet adopts a new bio-degradation technology, collecting and decomposing excrement via biological stuffing. It requires no water, emits no pollution or odor, and the degradation products could be used as organic fertilizer.

To regulate temperature and protect from hazards in the summer and winter seasons, new NEU insulation and fireproof materials are used for the roof and exterior walls of the toilet. The color—a combination of blue and grey—is in tune with the overall architectural design of the park. In a bid to promote effective access and management and reduce queuing time, the toilet is made to contain two parts. The main part consists of nine squat toilets for men and women; to the side are a separate men's urinal and the family toilet, equipped with close stool, washbasin, diaper changing table, and barrier-free handrails.

As a 5A national tourist attraction, Beijing Olympic Green is continuously improving service facilities like public toilets, meeting the standards of sufficient number, clean environment, free access, and effective management, according to people at the Olympic Green.
