China has a total of 275 laws in effect, according to official sources.
Among the 275 laws, there are the Constitution and 44 laws related to the Constitution, 34 civil and commercial laws, 89 administrative laws, 71 economic laws, 24 social laws, 1 criminal law, and 11 procedural and non-procedural laws, according to a symposium on local legislation held in the southwestern Chinese city of Kunming Wednesday.
The National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee has beefed up efforts on and sped up the amendments to the laws in recent years, said Shen Chunyao, head of the Commission for Legislative Affairs under the NPC Standing Committee.
"Many of the amendments to the laws need the corresponding implementation of local regulations," said Shen.
The socialist system of laws with Chinese characteristics, with the Constitution at its core, is a whole that includes laws, administrative regulations and local regulations, said Shen.
