Beijing to upgrade 3,200 kilometers of bike lanes by 2020

Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport on Wednesday announced that Beijing is setting up slow traffic demonstration zones in several areas, including Financial Street, Zhongguancun West, Qianmen, and Shijingshan Wanda Plaza. The city plans to upgrade 3,200 kilometers of bike lanes by the end of 2020, forming a continuous slow-traffic network around the Chinese capital.

Wang Dong, an official of Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport, said that the slow traffic zones in Financial Street and Zhongguancun West will focus on the quality improvement of smart transport based on their favorable transportation infrastructure; in Qianmen, the slow-traffic system will take the community's cultural tourism features into consideration to enhance the slow-traffic experience in the traditional hutongs (alleyways); in Shijingshan Wanda Plaze, the area's commercial function will be given priority in upgrading the slow-traffic zones.

In 2019, a dedicated bike lane between Huilongguan and Shangdi in northern Beijing became a trending spot for netizens, and many people rode bikes there to experience it firsthand. Currently, the Huilongguan community is also building a slow-traffic demonstration zone, as well as improvements to this bike lane and its adjacent pedestrian areas.

According to Wang, in addition to improving the slow-traffic zones by reducing the interweaving of motor vehicle traffic and non-motor paths, due attention will also be given to strengthening the seamless connection between pedestrians and bike lanes, subway stations, and bus stations.
