Beijing issued a blue alert for blizzards on Sunday, which is the lowest in the capital's four-tier warning system but the first blizzard alert for this winter.

The snow, which began hitting southwest Beijing at around 7 p.m. on Sunday, will cover the whole city at around midnight and last till Monday afternoon, according to the Beijing Meteorological Service.

In most areas of the city, the average precipitation was expected to reach 5 to 8 millimeters. The figure could exceed 10 mm, reaching the level of a blizzard, in certain areas of north Beijing.

The blizzards could bring fun as well as trouble for Beijing residents. Hu Xiao, the chief analyst of a weather reporting website, said this snowfall with a high moisture content is suitable for snowman making.

The city has issued an alert for icy roads and advised citizens to beware of the traffic disruptions, health problems and possible damages on agricultural facilities during the low temperature and windy weather after the snow.

In late November, Beijing experienced the first snow this winter, which experts said was timely after a much-delayed snowfall in last year's droughty winter.
