Beijing's sub-center in Tongzhou district will replace overhead communication cables on 92 roads with underground utility cables this year.

Recently, the sub-center has been taking down overhead cables on multiple roads and intersections. Tongji Road, for example, now looks clean and tidy without the spider-web-like wires and cables that used to stand along the road.

Tongzhou's urban management authorities initiated its cable-management work since March last year, and it has completed the work on seven trunk roads and 62 alleyways. A total of 2,367 underground optical cables were installed, with a length of 548.5 kilometers. The overhead cables that were taken down constituted a total length of 462.6 kilometers, and 463 poles were removed. This year will see another 92 roads free of overhead communication cables.

This whole project is a complicated task as the cables involve different communication carriers and surveillance networks. What's more, putting cables underground takes multiple procedures that requires accuracy and meticulous attention. Before installation, air quality monitoring and safety ropes must be secured; cable dissection and connection must be done at midnight so as to minimize inconvenience for nearby residents.

The work on Tongji Road took four days in total. Fourteen new tube wells were established; 699 meters of cable drenches were built; 156 cables were dissected and connected; a total length of 57.1 kilometers of optical cables were installed, and 76 poles were taken down. People are now able to get a clearer and wider view of the whole city, and the city image is further improved across the sub-center that covers 155 square kilometers, as the "cable-go-underground" campaign continues.
