Beijing has been stepping up efforts in the development of the ecological conservation area. As of the end of May, a supporting fund of 3 billion yuan (US$425.4 million) has been allocated, and 8.13 billion yuan of fixed asset investment has been arranged by the municipal government to support landscape greening, road infrastructure, education and medical facilities.

Beijing's ecological conservation area includes Mentougou, Pinggu, Huairou, Miyun, and Yanqing districts, as well as the mountainous regions in Changping and Fangshan districts.

"Our top priority in the ecological conservation area is to protect green water and green mountains," an official from the development and reform commission said. Currently, the ecological conservation area is speeding up to demolish illegal buildings and recover land for the conservation of greenery. By the end of May, 34 square km of afforestation had been completed, accounting for 67.3% of the annual target. Sustained efforts are also being made to improve the ecological status of small watersheds and micro water bodies to ensure water quality.

A "1+1" collaboration mode has been implemented among the plain districts and mountain districts in Beijing, in order to protect and develop the city's ecological conservation area. Chaohe Sports and Leisure Park, which opened to the public last year and soon became a favorite spot of nearby residents, was jointly built by Miyun and Chaoyang districts. At the same time, the plain districts also provide human resource support by transferring talents to mountain districts.

Other partnerships in this regard have included Dongcheng and Huairou districts, Xicheng and Mentougou districts, Haidian and Yanqing districts, Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area and Pinggu district, Fengtai and Fangshan districts (mountain area), and Shunyi and Changping districts (mountain area).

As the natural environment continues to improve, the ecological conservation area is also seeking to enhance internal driving force through green development. The area is starting to leverage major events and projects to accelerate the development of green industries such as cultural tourism, modern agriculture, and sci-tech innovation.

For instance, Yanqing district is focusing on modern horticulture and the winter sports industry, after hosting the Expo 2019 Beijing and in anticipation of the 2022 Winter Olympics. It has attracted 23 modern horticultural companies and 47 winter sports firms. In Miyun Campus of Zhongguancun Science Park, 40% of the campus' businesses are engaged in biomedical industry and smart manufacturing.

The official from the municipal development and reform commission said the standards in protecting ecology and environment, raising people's income, building public facilities, and service quality will remain the same while carrying out regular epidemic control work in the ecological conservation area. The municipal government will continue to cultivate the area's internal driving force so as to complete all the annual targets.
