The urban management commission under the People's Government of Dongcheng District in Beijing announced July 8 that the proportion of green travel — i.e. travel by non-motorized vehicles — has now reached 80% in the district.

This year, Dongcheng plans to extend the electronic toll collection for on-street parking across the section of the district outside the Second Ring Road, and build 18 km of bicycle lanes in the Wangfujing area.

Since the implementation of road parking reforms in Beijing, the amount of illegal roadside parking in Dongcheng has decreased. Last year, the district stepped up its off-site law enforcement through the addition of off-site detectors and the upgrading of old monitoring equipment. A total of 285 smart cameras for illegal parking were also installed.

According to Ha Hongtao, an official from the urban management commission under the People's Government of Dongcheng District, all 549 electronic detectors for roadside parking are able to takes images of illegal parking. In 2019, a total of 349,219 illegal parking violations were recorded via off-site law enforcement detectors in Dongcheng.

The district also plans to add 24 road parking electronic toll areas, covering 1,971 parking spaces, and install 110 smart camera devices to clamp down on illegal parking.

While strengthening management efforts on illegal parking, Dongcheng is also working to tap potential resources. It is encouraging the participation of non-government capital in turning current parking lots into vertical ones, and continues to push forward its staggered parking plan.

With less illegal parking, more no-parking hutongs, and the removal of many isolation barriers, traffic flow in the district has greatly improved. Last month, Beijing announced traffic management rankings of its districts for the first time, with Dongcheng coming out on top.
