80% of Beijing's public spending goes to improving people's lives

Over 80% of Beijing's public spending went to projects in education, healthcare, and employment to improve people's lives during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020), according to the Beijing Municipal Finance Bureau.

In the past five years, a total of 513.25 billion yuan (US$79.35 billion) were directed to education, contributing to increased affordability and availability of preschool education, higher enrollment rate, as well as diversified choices of schools for students in compulsory and high school education.

In the same period, around 422.57 billion yuan were given to social security and employment projects. According to official statistics, total employment in Beijing had increased to 12.73 million from 11.86 million at the end of the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015).

Expenditure on healthcare also increased from 32.6 billion yuan in 2015 to 53.4 billion yuan in 2019, with an annual growth rate of 13.13%. According to available data, public spending on healthcare in the 13th Five-Year Plan period totaled 241.57 billion yuan, contributing to improved public healthcare system and better efficiency in pre-hospital emergency care.

Moreover, a large proportion of Beijing's public spending was also channeled to other projects like elderly care, subsidized housing, environmental protection and pollution treatment, as well as services for disadvantaged groups.
