Beijing started piloting smart device inspection in the substation of Majiapu Station on Line 4 in early February, said an official from Beijing MTR Corporation.

According to Wang Jiangtao, the company's technical engineering manager, the intelligent robot helps to increase the frequency of inspection from once in seven days to once every three hours, consequently elevating inspection efficiency and equipment reliability.

The black-and-white robot has been equipped with a high definition imaging camera, an infrared thermal imager, and an ultrasonic sensor. With retractable and rotatable arms, it would inspect the devices from multiple angles along the preset guide rail, read their status information, carry out intelligent data analysis, and send out spontaneous alerts in case of abnormalities.

With the collected data, the robot can produce a report for inspection staff, and teach itself to achieve higher performance in the future.

Besides the smart robots, the subway operator has also introduced cashless payment services, and installed inspection drones on its other lines.
