CIPG, MIIS sign cooperation agreement

China International Publishing Group (CIPG) and the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate on professional training for international communication, translation and interpretation testing, and research and teaching of translation.

The signing ceremony was held via video link on Wednesday. Lu Cairong, vice president of CIPG, and Jeff Dayton-Johnson, vice president for academic affairs of Middlebury College and dean of the MIIS, signed the MoU on behalf of the two sides.

Speaking at the ceremony, Lu said that CIPG and the MIIS have established a comprehensive partnership through years of cooperation. He said that the MoU can help to better leverage the advantages of the both sides and enhance their cooperation, which will allow the two sides to pursue shared development on the basis of complementarity, and contribute more to deepening mutual understanding as well as people-to-people exchanges between China and the U.S.

Dayton-Johnson said that the cooperation between the MIIS and CIPG is of vital importance. He said CIPG offers internships for the students at the MIIS, which will help them to deepen their understandings of China. And visiting scholar programs provided by the MIIS will offer CIPG staff opportunities to further develop their language and translation expertise. Dayton-Johnson said he wishes that the two sides could engage in win-win cooperation in more areas in the future.

The MIIS is one of the eminent institutes of language and international policy studies in the U.S. The Graduate School of Translation, Interpretation and Language Education of the MIIS is renowned as one of the top three schools for translation and interpreting studies around the world.

Since 2004, CIPG has established cooperation with the MIIS on training translators and interpreters in various areas. For example, the MIIS has provided tailored training courses for CIPG, while CIPG has selected members of its staff to visit and study at the MIIS. CIPG has also invited professors from the MIIS to give lectures on translation and interpreting, and the CIPG training center has been responsible for administering the Advanced Entry Examination of the MIIS in northern China.

The signing ceremony was presided over by Min Yi, director of CIPG's human resource department. The ceremony was also attended by Laura Burian, dean of the Graduate School of Translation, Interpretation, and Language Education of the MIIS, Wallace Chen, program head for Chinese Translation and Interpretation of the MIIS, Bao Chuanyun, former dean of the Graduate School of Translation, Interpretation, and Language Education of the MIIS, Winnie Yung-Chung Heh, career advisor of the Center for Advising and Career Services of the MIIS, Jill Stoffers, senior director of institutional partnerships of the MIIS, Jiang Yonggang, director of CIPG's international cooperation department, and Fan Kuiyao, director of the CIPG training center.
