China's capital city Beijing is accelerating its efforts to become an international center for consumer spending by promoting the development of new commercial areas, upgrading old department stores, and promoting cross-border e-commerce to attract high quality commercial resources from around the world.

For popular high-end shopping malls like the SKP and China World Mall in the city's central business district, Beijing vows to give further support for them to attract trendy and global brands to open their first regional or flagship stores there.

According to statistics, over 1,000 global brands set up their first regional stores in Beijing from 2019 to 2020. In the first quarter of 2021, a total of 207 brands opened their first regional stores in Beijing, registering a significant increase over the same period last year.

For traditional department stores, Beijing will move forward with tailored upgrade plans to improve their structures and business models, retain customers and boost consumer activity.

Chang’an Shopping Mall, as one of the first department stores to carry out the upgrade plan, has seen a huge increase in customers despite the impact of COVID-19.

With the pandemic reducing international travel, Beijing is also speeding up the development of cross-border e-commerce and duty-free stores in downtown areas to meet consumer demand.
