Beijing will start to renovate a railway line that runs through several old coalmines in its western Mentougou district, aiming to begin the work by end of the year and offer sightseeing tours next spring.
The line was used to transport coal as well as people from western Beijing before the four coalmines there were shut down by 2020. After renovations, five new stations will be set up along the 33.4-kilometer line on top of the existing seven. They will link up landscape sightseeing areas, historical sites, folk customs areas, ancient roads and villages, temples, and other cultural resources.
In addition, the four coalmines and their neighboring areas will be transformed into a cultural tourism and recreational area.
All the stations and trains will take on unique characteristics and themes. Six stations will be commissioned in the first phase, and two trains with the theme of folk customs and ancient roads as well as railway and mining culture will be open first.
According to the renovation schedule, the district will finish collecting designs for renovating the railway, the four coalmines, and their neighboring areas this year.
