Beijing plans to set up 20 zones for protecting ancient trees across the city on a pilot basis, the city's greening authority announced Wednesday.
The 22 zones comprising theme parks and preservation areas include Sujiayu village and Xinchengzi township in Miyun district, Kangling Township and Tanyu village in Changping district, and Dongsi street in Dongcheng district, said an official at the Beijing Gardening and Greening Bureau, also known as the Capital Greening Office.
The city defines ancient trees as ones that have lived for more than 100 years. Beijing currently has more than 40,000 ancient trees, over 90% of which are Chinese pine trees and other indigenous trees.
"We are working to protect the trees as well as their surrounding environment," said Qu Hong, an official at the Capital Greening Office.
By setting up new theme parks and preservation zones, the Beijing greening authority said it aims to expand the space for the trees to grow, so that they can better accumulate nutrients and live longer and healthier.
