"Be joyful always, do your part, care for others and be grateful." A group of people with disabilities sang together at a rehabilitation center in Yongning town, northwestern Beijing's Yanqing district on May 13.

The choir performance was to mark the 31st National Day for Helping the Disabled that falls on May 16.

In 1991, China designated the third Sunday of May as the annual National Day for Helping the Disabled. This year, the theme is "consolidating the results of poverty alleviation and improving the quality of life of people with disabilities."

The art performance of the disabled people in Yongning town is part of a series of events organized by the local committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the local government to encourage people with disabilities to participate in various cultural activities.

Yan Kexia, deputy director of Disabled Persons' Federation of Yanqing district, said the Party and government always attached great importance to helping people with disabilities.

"Social protection plays a role in assisting people with disabilities, but it is also important that those with disabilities step out of their houses, engage in social activities and lead a dignified and fulfilling life," Yan said.

Aid and Service, a non-profit organization located in Yongning town, has been cooperating with the local government to provide rehabilitation assistance for people with mental and physical disabilities since 2016.

Bai Wei, head of the organization, said, "We also offer vocational training and employment assistance to people with disabilities, including baking, gardening, car wash and auto overhaul. The local government helps provide financial aid, covering their food, training and other activity cost."

Liu Xue, an intellectually disabled person living in the town who joined the rehabilitation center four years ago, now works in a garage, a job opportunity provided by the center. With its help, he has gradually turned from a taciturn person to one willing to communicate with others.

"When I was sad, people in the rehabilitation center comforted me. I feel very warm and happy. I'm hopeful for the future," Liu said slowly and clearly.
