The 2021 World Conference on Science Literacy will kick off in Beijing late November, the China Association for Science and Technology announced at a press conference Thursday.

Launched in 2018, the annual event is aimed at raising global awareness of the importance of science literacy and building global cooperation platforms and mechanisms.

The theme of this year's edition is "Enhancing Science Literacy and Jointly Building a Green Home" in response to China's commitment to achieve peak carbon emissions before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060.

Distinguished scientists, high-level decision-makers, prominent scholars, representatives of science and technology organizations and experienced frontline workers will be invited to share their views and achievements on green development.

At the plenary session of the conference to be held on Nov. 30, keynote reports will be made on such topics as carbon emission reduction, climate change, green development and science literacy. A framework of evaluation systems for science literary will also be released, and an awards ceremony will be held for an international competition on popular science videos, with outstanding works being exhibited.

The conference will also feature a series of thematic forums, scheduled to be held in the first week of December. Themes will include the development of a reserve of young scientists and engineers, on-campus and off-campus science education for the building of an ecological civilization, the development and sharing of ecology-themed science popularization resources, the relationship between science literacy and green development, and equity in science literary development.

It was also revealed at the press conference that the establishment of a world science literary organization, proposed at the 2019 edition of the conference, is making good progress, with a preparation committee having been set up in December 2020 and 22 member organizations already registered.
