Bidding farewell to continuous rainy days of late, Beijing has finally entered the rhythm of autumn. The Beijing Meteorological Service yesterday predicted that around half of the ginkgo trees in the urban areas of the capital will soon turn a resplendent yellow, making early November the best time to appreciate and capture the beauty of the golden ginkgo leaves.

The meteorological authority predicts that the Beijing weather from Monday to Friday this week will be mainly sunny, with a little bit of cloud. Highs during the day will reach around 15°C to 17°C, with lows at night dropping to approximately 4°C to 8°C. A cold weather front will usher in the latter part of the week and bring a significant drop in temperature.

Last weekend, as the ginkgo leaves across the city began to turn yellow, many Beijing citizens took the opportunity to post photos of golden leaves on social media.

As of the end of October, ginkgo in the mountainous and outer suburbs have entered their best viewing period, with a discoloration rate of more than 60%, according to the meteorological authority. Meanwhile, the discoloration rate of some relatively smaller trees has reached close to 100%.

However, due to the urban microclimate, the ginkgo leaves in the urban and low-lying areas remain mostly yellow and green, with the discoloration rate being only around 30%. Popular spots to see golden ginkgo in Beijing include the ginkgo boulevard near Diaoyutai and Ditan, Beijing Olympic Park, Summer Palace, and the Lama Temple, but have yet to enter their prime autumn color period.

It is expected that by November 5, the discoloration rate of ginkgo in Beijing's urban areas will reach 50-60%, with the percentage of yellow leaves increasing significantly. As such, this weekend will be a good time for citizens to enjoy the autumn ginkgo.

Li Liang, a meteorological analyst at Weather China (weather.com.cn), said the arrival of cold air and the extent of temperature drop are the main meteorological factors that affect the start of the discoloration of ginkgo leaves. Generally, when the temperature is between 5°C and 0°C, the discoloration of ginkgo leaves accelerates, and when the temperature falls below 0°C, the ginkgo leaves freeze and begin to fall.
