Beijing has started the ecological restoration and improvement of the entire 170-kilometer main stream of its mother river Yongding River, and plans to build a green ecological corridor alongside, said officials of the municipal development and reform commission on Monday.

The municipality has been restoring and improving the river in the 91-kilometer mountain and valley section and the 61-kilometer plain south section of the river in recent years.

The projects in the mountain and valley section, which started in 2020 and will last through this year, include renovating 20 water-overflowing bridges and add 86 hectares of wetland and 59 hectares of vegetation.

The first-phase projects in the plain south section include developing six patches of continuous wetlands to resemble natural wetlands. The projects also plan to add 367 hectares of vegetation and 72 kilometers of waterfront greenways.

With the restoration efforts, the length of watercourses of the river has increased by 93.7 kilometers. Now, clear water continuously flows through the mountain and valley section, and the water surface area in the plain section has recovered from 8.28 square kilometers to 16.05 square kilometers.
