The Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) has expressed firm opposition to so-called concluding observations by the UN Human Rights Committee on the implementation of the relevant provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in Macao.

Certain contents are based on unverified reports or sources of information, and do not align with realities, and the criticism against the human rights situation in Macao is biased and baseless, said the spokesperson for the office.

Since Macao's return to the motherland, the Macao SAR government has united and led all sectors of society to act in strict accordance with the Constitution and the Basic Law of the Macao SAR under the leadership of the central government and the strong support of the mainland.

The practice of "one country, two systems" in Macao has achieved universally-recognized success, and Macao has ushered in the best development situation in history. Macao residents enjoy an unprecedented range of rights and freedom in accordance with the law, which is a fact widely acknowledged by anyone without prejudice, said the spokesperson.

The spokesperson stressed that the liaison office will always support the Macao SAR government in firmly safeguarding the fundamental rights and freedom enjoyed by Macao residents under the Macao SAR Basic Law and implementing the relevant provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in accordance with the Basic Law.
